Repairing and upgrading folks’ computers lies at the heart of PC Experts’ work. We replace faulty components, solder broken circuits, format hard drives, remove viruses, install operating systems and software, troubleshoot bugs, install RAM and video cards, tune up slow computers, and more. Some of the most common repairs and solutions we provide are detailed below.
Virus and malware removal: Hacking is big businesses, and distributing malicious software makes money. Fake antivirus programs are one of the biggest malware threats out there. We remove these and nearly any other infection you can pick up. Typical cost: $75 to $115.
Tune-ups: Barring more significant issues, sometimes computers just slow down over time. We can combat the laws of entropy by optimizing a computer’s startup profile and virtual memory allocation and/or increasing its RAM. We can dramatically speed up most computers—sometimes even brand new ones—for under $75 and sometimes as cheap as $25.
Laptop screen replacement: Screens crack all the time, or sometimes their backlights blow out, just like a light bulb. Replacement screens run anywhere from $85 to $160 but average around $100. Labor for installing a new screen is $40 to $60.
Operating system installation and troubleshooting: Installing a new operating system, including all device drivers and basic software, can cost anywhere from $50 to $100, with newer operating systems being cheaper. (Just a barebones OS without any additional software is also cheaper.) The cost for repairing a non-booting or glitchy OS without having to reinstall begins at $25 but averages about $75.
Hard drive replacement and imaging: The cost of a new hard drive with installation depends on the size of the replacement drive but ranges between $65 and $120 in the vast majority of cases. Creating an exact duplicate of all the data and programs on your old hard drive costs about $35 to $50 if data recovery is not required. Many customers opt for a fresh operating system installation on a new hard drive.
Power supply replacement: A bad power supply will render your computer useless. It won’t even turn on. Desktop power supply replacements average $75 with parts and labor. Cheaper options exist for customers who don’t plan on keeping their computer for more than a year or so. Laptop power supplies usually cost around $35 to $40 if you order them through us.
DC jack repairs: Laptops can’t charge without a working DC jack (often referred to as “the place where you plug in the cord”). A jack repair that doesn’t requiring soldering often costs $100 or less. A repair requiring soldering can cost $150 or more.
Laptop keyboard replacements: Spills, thumps, and grime can cause laptop keyboards to malfunction. We can usually replace a broken keyboard for about $75 (parts and labor inclusive).
